Joseph Lawrence was born Longmeadow in 1886 (Newmarket Q1-1886 3B:560), son of William and Emily Ann LAWRENCE (née HART).
1891 census...Aged 5, he was at Mill Road, Bottisham with his father William LAWRENCE [42] bricklayer born Swaffham Bulbeck; his mother Emily [35] born Longmeadow; brothers Sidney [12] bricklayer's apprentice born Longmeadow, Frederick [7] born Cambridge and Eton [6 months] born Longmeadow. 1901 census...Aged 15, apprentice bricklayer, he was at Longmeadow Road, Lode with his parents, brothers Sidney (bricklayer) and Frederick (bricklayer's apprentice), sister Rosa [12], brothers Eton and Herbert [6] and sister Elizabeth. They were all now recorded as born in Lode except his father William who is now born in Little Swaffham. In Q1-1911 he married Bottisham born Emily May HOWARD [24-4-1891] [20] 1911 census...Aged 25, married less than one year, he was with his wife Emily in Swaffham Bulbeck. They had 4 children, Phyllis Irene [16-6-1911], Evelyn Benetta [29-6-1912], Felix Lawrence [28-6-1913] and Joseph Kitchener [24-9-1914]. The address was Grove Terrace, Swaffham Bulbeck. |

He enlisted in Cambridge. His medal card indicates the 1914 Star but no clasp. The clasp for being with range of the enemy guns between 5th August and 22nd
November 1914 was only instituted after the war, had to be claimed and to be verified. Many relatives were either unaware of this or had just had enough of
war and did not claim.
With just three of his battery killed this would seem to indicate one gun crew being hit. So far unable to ascertain their exact whereabouts on that day
